A paintball gun or marker is the main part of paintball equipment in the sport of paintball. They are commonly referred to as paintball markers, paintball gun or riffle. They basically work by the use of expanding gases such as carbon dioxide or compressed air to propel paint balls through the barrel and finally strike the target. The approximated muzzle velocity of a paintball gun is 90 m/s (300ft/s). Most paintball markers can be disassembled into four components: the body, hopper, barrel, air tank/gas system which are very easy to assemble.
Paintball games can either be short distance or long distance and the best long range paintball guns can be classified into three main types: pump, electronic and mechanical. Pump paintball markers are the oldest type that has been used over the years. It requires manual operation to fire. The user has to work a shotgun-like pump to cock the gun and chamber the next paintball each time you shoot. Mechanical paintball guns are the most commonly used in recreational plays. They are semi-automatic hence they fire one shot per trigger pull. Apart from that, these mechanical paintball riffles are affordable, easy to operate and maintain as long as you have the necessary accessories. When the trigger is pulled, it moves a sear catch thus releasing a hammer or striker that is under spring tension. The striker consequently hits the valve opening it to propel the paintball out of the barrel. The pressure throws the striker back which is caught by the sear until the next paintball fall in place in the breech. Electronic paintball guns use an electronic solenoid to fire. The trigger clicks a micro-switch or trips a laser beam. A circuit board controls all the commands that go to the solenoid hence the paintball marker is capable of burst, ramping, full auto and other firing modes.
